Pump or semi-auto for home defense???

Okay I need people who've actually thought this through. I've got a Mossberg 500 I love for the range but I've been going back and forth on whether to get a semi-auto for the nightstand. The argument I keep hearing for pump is "nothing sounds like racking a pump" but honestly that's not a real defense strategy, right? If it's 2am and someone's in your house you don't want to be doing anything extra. On the other hand I've run my 500 enough that it's basically muscle memory at this point. Semi-auto feels faster on paper but I've also seen them choke on cheap shells. What are you guys actually running at home, and more importantly, why?

If your 500 is second nature, stick with it. A reliable pump you run well beats a faster gun you don’t trust and semi-auto only wins if it’s 100% proven with your defensive load.
